Dishwasher Repair Cost vs Replace: The 50% Rule Explains Most of It

Every guide on dishwasher repair cost vs replace lands on the same rule, even when the dollar figures differ. If the repair costs more than about half of what a comparable new dishwasher costs, replace it. Under that line, repair almost always wins.

Start With the Age of the Machine

A dishwasher under about 5 years old is usually worth fixing almost regardless of the repair, since it likely has years of life left and the part is still easy to find. Past 8 to 12 years, the calculation shifts. Even a moderate repair on an old unit competes with a new one, and parts for older models can be harder to source and cost more when you do find them.

Run the Numbers Before You Decide

Get a real repair estimate first. Then price a comparable replacement, including delivery and installation, not just the sticker price of the unit itself. If the repair sits under half that number, fixing it is usually the better deal. If it sits close to or past half, replacement starts to look better, especially on a machine that’s already a few years old.

A Few Repairs Are Almost Always Worth It

A broken latch, a stuck soap dispenser, or a clogged filter are all cheap, common, and don’t depend much on the age of the machine. Fixing one of these on an otherwise healthy dishwasher rarely comes close to the 50% line.

These Repairs Push Toward Replacement

A dead control board, a failed motor, or a cracked tub cost more to fix and often show up on older machines already showing other signs of wear. Our dishwasher control board problems guide covers how to tell a real board failure apart from a cheaper cause, since that distinction changes which side of the 50% line you land on.

A machine that’s failed more than once in the past year is worth weighing differently too. Repeated repairs add up, even when each one individually stays under the 50% line.

Dishwasher Repair Cost vs Replace: Where Energy Use Fits In

An older dishwasher costs more to run than a new one, sometimes enough to matter over several years. Weigh that against the repair estimate when a machine sits close to the 50% line either way, not as the deciding factor on its own.

When the Decision Isn’t Close

Not every case needs the math. Standing water on the floor, a rusted-through tub, a machine that’s stopped and started multiple times in one season, or a repair quote that flatly tells you a part is no longer available all point to replacement. A first-time repair on a machine you trust and that’s well under 5 years old is just as easy the other way.

If you’re not sure which side of that line your dishwasher sits on, our dishwasher troubleshooting guide can help you figure out what’s actually wrong before you get a quote for either one.
