Oven Making Noise: What Each Sound Means
An oven making noise usually isn’t a mystery once you know what to listen for, and a lot of these sounds are completely normal.
These Sounds Are Actually Fine
Popping during preheat happens as the metal inside expands with the heat, harmless. A cooling fan that keeps running for a few minutes after you turn the oven off does exactly what it’s supposed to, it’s protecting the electronics from residual heat.
Clicking During Preheat
Your oven’s thermostat cycles the elements on and off to hold a steady temperature, and that produces occasional clicking. Regular, spaced-out clicking is normal. Constant, rapid clicking that doesn’t settle down points to a struggling thermostat instead.
Oven Making a Humming or Buzzing Noise?
A worn cooling fan motor or debris buildup usually causes this, and it tends to get slightly louder as the oven runs. A relay or the control board itself can produce the same kind of low, steady buzz, and that’s the more likely explanation if you’re still hearing it well after the oven’s off. Our oven control board failure guide covers this kind of electrical issue in more depth.
Grinding or Whirring
This points to worn fan motor bearings. The fan still runs, it just doesn’t spin smoothly anymore, and the sound usually gets louder over time rather than staying constant.
Gas Oven Clicking or Whooshing Before It Lights
A weak or failing igniter struggles to light the gas cleanly, and you’ll hear repeated clicking, a delayed whoosh, or uneven firing right before ignition. If that pairs with the oven also struggling to heat, our oven not heating guide covers the igniter specifically.
Rattling or Clanging
Pull the racks out, clean them, and reseat them fully in their grooves, loose or improperly seated racks cause most of this. Exterior screws and panels rattle too sometimes, just from ordinary vibration, and tightening what you can safely reach usually quiets that down.
Oven Making Noise That Won’t Stop?
Persistent buzzing after you’ve turned the oven off, grinding that keeps getting louder, or any noise alongside a gas smell all mean it’s time to stop and call someone for oven repair rather than keep testing. Unplug the oven or shut off the breaker first, and if it’s a gas oven, shut off the gas supply too.
If your oven’s also not heating properly on top of the noise, our oven not heating guide walks through that symptom specifically, and if it’s an electrical hum tied to the display or controls, our oven control board failure guide covers what actually causes that.
